The Bible in 90 Days

Kerry Bauman, Senior Pastor
With the end of the year drawing near, it is about time for many of us  to once again consider what changes we will resolve to make in 2010. Just in case you’re wondering, here are ten of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions according to a survey done by the United States government:

•  Volunteer to help others
•  Take a trip
•  Reduce stress
•  Quit smoking
•  Drink less alcohol
•  Get a better education
•  Get in shape
•  Find a better job
•  Lose weight
•  Save money

While  each  of  these  endeavors  is  a worthy  ambition,  I would like to suggest another one that could quite possibly be the most  life changing of all…read  the entire Bible  in  the frst 90 days.  “Impossible,”  you  say!  It  really  isn’t. As a matter of fact, to achieve this goal you have to be willing to read only 12 pages of Scripture per day. Think about it. If you’re an average reader (about a page every 3-4 minutes), your talking about a commitment of 36-48 minutes a day to complete the entire Bible in just three months.

To put it in perspective, consider that on average, American adults use forty minutes out of every day to groom ourselves. In addition, we spend more than a half hour engaged in sports-related activities (when you total the amount of time spent traveling to events, and watching and participating in them). Care to know how much of our day is spent watching TV?

The answer is two hours and forty-fve minutes!

Now  if  I may,  let me  share with  you  two  verses  that speak  to  the  stewardship  of  the  time God  has  given  us so  to  accomplish His  purposes. Ephesians  5:15-16  says, “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.”  Though we live in the midst of evil times, the Apostle Paul exhorts us to take advantage of every opportunity we have to bring glory to God.

It seems to me that a very effective way of accomplishing this goal is to feast on the Holy Scriptures every day. I am confdent  that  if  you will  prayerfully  accept  this  challenge that begins on January 1st, you will beneft  in  three ways.

First,  you’ll  discover  a  greater  hunger  for  the Bible  than you’ve previously experienced. Second, you’ll have a better understanding of God’s  redemptive plan  for mankind and last, but certainly not  least, you’ll grow closer  to our Lord than before you began.

So what do you say? Will you join us in reading the Bible in 90 days? All it takes is deciding to watch about 30% less television in a given day and you’ll get it done. Please don’t say “no” to this challenge until you’ve asked the Lord what He wants you  to do. This  is one  resolution  that  just might change you forever!
